The City of Lexington owns and operates four utility services: a water treatment and distribution system, a wastewater treatment and collection system, an electric distribution system and a natural gas distribution system. In addition to serving city residents, Lexington Utilities also serve customers in areas throughout Davidson County and combine to total $72 million or 73% of the annual budget. The utilities are operated in a manner similar to private business enterprise; whereas, the guiding principle for City Council is to finance and recover the costs of providing these utility services to Lexington Utilities customers through user charges and fees.
