Historic Preservation

Historic preservation is the practice of identifying, protecting, and maintaining buildings, structures, landscapes, and other cultural resources that have historical, architectural, or cultural significance.

The Lexington City Council established the Lexington Historic Preservation Commission in 2005 to "safeguard the heritage of the city by preserving any district or landmark herein that embodies important elements of its culture, history, architectural history or prehistory" and "promote the use and conservation of such district or landmark for the education, pleasure and enrichment of the residents of the City and the State as a whole." In 2015, City Council merged the Commission with the Planning Board for a comprehensive review.

Historic Preservation inquiries can be directed to staff in the Office of Business and Community Development. For additional information, please contact us.
