The Public Buildings Department maintains and repairs 66 city owned facilities, including the Edward C. Smith Civic Center. The department also maintains Lexington Furniture Industries Plant 1 property while it remains in the redevelopment stages as part of the Lexington Depot District. Building Services Coordinator Jeremy Owen oversees this area of responsibility and the custodial services at the various city facilities, with a goal to buy "green" cleaning products whenever feasible and cost effective.
The Public Grounds Department provides mowing and vegetation control for 218 miles of right-of-way, water tanks, various traffic islands, city pools and the entrance signs to the city limits; as well as beautifies City of Lexington parks. Public Grounds staff coordinate with other city departments to ensure a smooth operation and clean up of public events including the Fantastic 4th of July celebration, Uptown Lexington social outings, and the Barbecue Festival.
Public Grounds personnel also hold the responsibility of operating four city cemeteries by providing landscape management and burial assistance to grieving families and funeral homes. Grounds Maintenance Supervisor Randy Sink oversees these areas of responsibility.
