Curbside Residential Rollout Recycling Grant Awarded (City Council Goal #10)

City awarded grant to start Curbside Rollout Recycling Pilot Program!
Post Date:08/14/2012

The Lexington City Council is pleased to move forward in implementing progress toward the goal of “green” initiatives by encouraging citizens to increase recycling through a Curbside Rollout Recycling Pilot Program. With the larger size of the rollout containers, collection will be scheduled bi-weekly.

On August 13th, City Council accepted a State grant of $12,600 for the City to test, beginning in January 2013, a new automated rollout recycling program. The City will match the grant and purchase 500 95-gallon rollout containers to automate the program. Currently, the City uses 18-gallon bins. Most people who recycle regularly will attest that their recycling has grown much larger than their garbage; thus, the need for the larger container and the need to automate. Four neighborhoods have been selected for the test. The City and State will monitor the results to look to expand it to other neighborhoods.

The areas selected for the bi-weekly pilot program include: The Vineyards, Knob Hill, Westover and Hillside. Residents residing in the selected pilot areas will be notified soon with details of the program and information will be made available via the Recycling & Waste Collection services webpage!
