The suspense has been building up for a very long time and
TODAY, October 8th the treasures created out of an iconic furniture plant from right here in Uptown Lexington will all be revealed. Truckloads of antique doors, lights, factory carts, and more were torn out of Lexington Furniture Plant 1, affectionately known as Dixie Furniture and LFI 1. Soon the nation will watch on television as those items are repurposed into beautiful furniture that is being sold online.
The plant closed down more than a decade ago. It had been in operation since 1901 and in its glory days employed thousands at its nearly 1-million-square-foot facility. Now the history of that plant is being relived in the form of beautiful pieces of furniture that are more like art. The antiques will truly have some unique stories about Lexington’s past and future. City Communications Specialist, Kelly Coggins, talked with one of the Dawgs, Grayson Goldsmith, and asked her about her favorite find. “I’d have to say the wood block veneer presses are my favorite. They have a minimalist industrial look and will make cool tables.” If you watched the clips the City posted on YouTube about the show, you may have heard about a chaise lounge that the dawgs wanted to make. Grayson talked about that as well, “We did make the chaise lounge, using the wider width wooden conveyor belt we cut the planks down to size, cleaned and reattached the chain hardware, and welded a frame to support it. Hangs like a hammock!”
One of the local celebrities, who we have to thank for the national exposure
from the show, Bob Timberlake, would be proud. Timberlake actually was behind the whole production. Timberlake and his family brought the old furniture plants to the attention of Black Dog Salvage, which is the architectural salvage company from Roanoke, Virginia that the show is based on. “I’ve been a fan of Bob’s since my best friend worked for his Blowing Rock Gallery while we were in school at App State. I am more than honored he brought this opportunity to our attention, and certainly hope we made him proud—maybe we can work together again someday!” said Grayson.
Salvage Dawgs airs nationally on the DIY Network, internationally on the Travel Channel and Fine Living Channel and is available on Netflix, Amazon, and iTunes. Again, the episode about Lexington airs October 8th at 9:30 p.m.
If you want to purchase one of the salvaged items or just get an up close look at them, head to the Salvage Dawgs website at www.blackdogsalvage.com. The crew says it can always make custom designs if the public is interested!
