On December 4th, Lexington Parks and Recreation received the NC Recreation & Park Association Arts and Humanities award for Art in the Park.  This award recognizes the most innovative and effective arts and humanities programs of parks, recreation, and leisure service in North Carolina.

Art in the Park was a free, inaugural event for Lexington that took place in April 2024 in partnership with Arts Davidson County.  The event included performances, hands-on experiences, local musicians, visual artists, and vendors. Attendees were invited to help in completing the painting of a community mural. The mural is a 350 square foot image of a monarch butterfly titled “Social Butterfly” which faces a butterfly garden and can be found on the side of the Robbins Recreation Center.

Social butterfly was created in cooperation with Arts Davidson County, and supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the NC Department of Natural & Cultural Resources.

"Butterflies are known for their transformation and pollination. We feel that recreation can have these same effects on both individuals and our community as a whole." says Andrew Lance, Parks and Recreation Manager. "Our parks, programs, and events allow people to discover, explore, and connect, right in their own backyard."
