The Office of Business and Community Development (BCD) provides:
Business Development: Collaborates with partner agencies, brokers, commercial property owners, developers and professional recruiters to attract new retail and restaurant businesses, provide support to existing businesses and assist local entrepreneurs in opening targeted businesses. Redevelopment: Intricately involved with numerous projects within the Depot District, including the progress towards re-establishing passenger rail service. The BCD Office is experienced with working with State and Federal agencies to obtain required approvals and permits. Community Development: Works with partners, such as the Lexington Homeownership Center and Habitat for Humanity, to develop short and long-range neighborhood and community improvement plans. Seeks grant funding and administers revitalization efforts. Provides staff support to the Appearance Commission. The City of Lexington has procedures in place to ensure rights are protected and to promote fair housing. Zoning and Land Use: Maintains and enforces the City's Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) and provides staff support to the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment. Inspection and Code Enforcement: Enforces the State Building Code, local ordinances pertaining to nuisances, cleanliness and the City's minimum housing code. These codes are in place to ensure the health, safety and welfare of citizens and visitors.
The State Building Code requires permits be issued by the City prior to initiating building, mechanical, plumbing or electrical improvements to structures. To obtain an application for a trade permit, click here. The application should be faxed to 336-243-7766 or emailed. The typical time frame for issuance of a permit is less than ten days, depending on the scope of work.
